Think of fun on the beach in Goa and one of the first
names that comes to mind is Anjuna Beach.
It is one of the most popular beaches in North Goa.
The picturesque coconut palm lined beach in Bardez Taluka
is just 18kms from Panaji, the capital of Goa. It can
be easily reached by road from Panaji.
A few decades ago it was a secluded village till it
was discovered by the Flower Children of the sixties
or the hippies. The remnants of that age still fill
the full moon nights with Acid House or rave parties
on the beach. International tourists home in on Anjuna
Beach even today for a lazy vacation in the
sun.
Anjuna Beach is relatively safe for
swimming mainly because of an unusual rocky formation
which projects into the sea on the southern end of the
beach. This headland forms a protected cove silver white
sands lapped by calm waters. This part is known as ‘Ozran’
or the Jewel of Anjuna. What more could anyone want
on a vacation besides the golden sun, silver white sands
and rippling waters?
If you are looking for more do not miss the weekly
Wednesday Flea Market on Anjuna Beach.
At around 11a.m. colourful stalls with all sorts of
trinkets, T-shirts and cassettes line the market area
on Anjuna Beach. Particularly popular
are the stalls selling trinkets from Kashmir and warm
clothes from Tibet. Even if you do not live on Anjuna
Beach, make sure to take a bus or a ride on
a fishing boat to experience this novel flea market.
Do not be surprised to find foreign tourists who are
short of cash selling some of their possessions here,
like cameras, books and even back packs.
Other attractions in the area are the remarkably well
preserved Chapora fort. Old Goan homes like the Albuquerque
Mansion and Mascarenhas Mansion built in the traditional
old Portuguese architecture are also worth a visit.
Looking for more exciting things to do? Go on an adrenalin
pumping bungee jump from the nearby 80-ft tower. You
can go paragliding and windsurfing too at Anjuna
Beach.
There are plenty of places to stay and eat at Anjuna.
